Early Paleozoic accretionary orogens along the Western Gondwana margin

چکیده

Abstract Early Paleozoic accretionary orogens dominated the Western Gondwana margin and were characterized by nearly continuous subduction associated with crustal extension back-arc basin development. The southwestern is represented Famatinian Pampean basement realms exposed in South America, both related to protracted evolution of Terra Australis Orogen, whereas northwestern mainly recorded Cadomian domains Europe adjacent regions. However, no clear relationships between these regions so far established. Based on a compilation reevaluation geological, paleomagnetic, petrological, geochronological isotopic evidence, this contribution focuses crustal-scale tectonic geodynamic processes occurring orogens, aiming at disentangling their common evolution. Data show that high-temperature/low-pressure metamorphism relatively high geothermal gradients, resulting from development extended/hyperextended margins bulk transtensional deformation. In sense, retreating-mode margin, though short-lived pulses compression/transpression also occurred. existence retreating zones favoured mantle-derived magmatism mixing young (meta)sedimentary sources thin continental crust. Crustal reworking previous forearc sequences due trenchward arc migration thus took place through assimilation anatexis arc/back-arc Therefore, locus growth Gondwana, intimately major flare-up events, such as those Famatian arcs. Slab roll back, probably decreasing convergence rates plate velocities after assembly, was key factor for orogen-scale processes. Coupled synchronous oblique dextral deformation, slab back might trigger toroidal mantle flow, accounting transtension, extension/transtension large-scale anticlockwise rotation mainland.

Methane along the western Mexican margin

We investigated the processes controlling the water-column and sediment methane distributions at 14 stations along the western Mexican margin, in and around the Gulf of California. Stations were grouped into two categories: coastal basins and open margins. Diffusive methane fluxes from the sediment at all sites, as estimated from sediment methane gradients, were 0.24–5.5 mmol m22 d21, with the ...

Accordion vs. quantum tectonics: insights into continental growth processes from the Paleozoic of eastern Gondwanan

The Early Paleozoic Lachlan Fold Belt of eastern Australia is widely regarded as an ancient convergent plate margin beneath which paleo-Pacific (Panthalassic) oceanic lithosphere was continuously subducted. It is cited as the type example of a retreating accretionary orogeny. However, sandstone compositions, the sedimentological nature and timing of chert accumulation and overall stratigraphic ...

Early Paleozoic transform-margin structure beneath the Mississippi coastal plain, southeast United States

A geophysical transect across the central Gulf of Mexico coastal plain shows that the early Paleozoic continental margin of southern Laurentia is preserved in a nearly pristine state beneath younger strata that were emplaced during the late Paleozoic Ouachita orogeny and formation of the modern Gulf of Mexico coastal plain. The thickness of the crystalline crust decreases abruptly across the ma...

Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous bashal strata are preserved in a discontinuous belt along the inboard margin of the Alexander-WrangelliaPeninsular terrane (AWP) in Alaska and western Canada, on the outboard margin of terranes in the Canadian Cordillera accreted to North America prior to Late Jurassic time, and along the Cordilleran margin from southern Oregon to southern California. Nearly ...
